Redwood deck

This redwood deck we built started off as a repair project but after finding extensive termite damage we opted to rebuild the entire deck from the ground up. The reasons the termites were able to infest the structure was due partly to poor quality craftsmanship and how the materials were used. Most decks these days are built with what's called pressure treated lumber for the undercarriage (the sub-structure under the redwood or other decking) which supports the deck boards. The reason most decks are built this way is because termites do not like pressure treated lumber, they only eat organic! All joking aside pressure treated lumber is near termite proof and it holds up to moisture and is rated for direct ground contact. The only other good option is to paint regular wood such as doug fir with a proper three coats. It has been shown that wood painted on all sides and ends keeps termites and moisture out of the wood. This is the options we chose for this deck except we installed pressure treated 6x6 posts where they mounted to concrete footings. Then we finished things off with a mid grade redwood decking screwed down with lifetime deck screws!
